Every step in these boots felt like walking over a bed of scorpions stinging his feet. The uniform burned his skin with each fold. Each button possessed a dagger that stabbed his chest as they slid over his skin.

This was the uniform of the enemy. His enemy. VILE. The enemy he’d been fighting for decades.

But it hadn’t been decades. That had been a dream. Traveling to the future. Lost in time. Alone. Moral Code was back where he should be. Back in the military, not on a super-team. Back in his time. Back with Nathan.

Not just back. Better. Living with Nathan. In love with Nathan. Nathan was in love with him. This was exactly what Moral Code had always wanted, even if he could never admit it. This was his dream, and it had become his reality.

Why did it feel so wrong?

“Come on,” Nathan said. His uniform was the same stain of evil, a slick black, with a gold V on the shoulder, yet he smiled as they entered through a set of giant metal doors sliding open.

Twisting levels of platforms surrounded them, cascading upward like never ending box seats at Edge City Stadium. Hundreds of people, all in black with gold Vs on their shoulders, ran up and down metal stairs, some with clipboards, some with walkie-talkies, all in serious focus. It was louder than a barracks minutes before lights out, clanging, yelling, buzzing all around. Lights were blinking random arrays of colors. A maze of pathways spinning into a hypnotic spiral, making Moral Code uneasy. He couldn’t hear anything, yet he heard everything.

Until a hand pressed warmly against his arm. “Hey there,” said Nathan. “Talk to me.”

Moral Code grunted, though he tried to pass it off as a cough. “Just something in my throat.”

“I thought we took care of that this morning…” Nathan winked. “I’m sure we can sneak away after the briefing.”

It took Moral Code a moment to realize what Nathan was hinting at. “I’ll be fine.” It was awkward enough walking through this den of villainy, wondering why it all looked so…normal.

Nathan pressed his lips together, then spun back around, heading in what seemed like a random direction. He almost seemed disappointed.

As they walked, soldiers stepped aside. One or both of them was clearly important. Parts of this felt familiar. He’d walked this pathway before. He’d followed Nathan like this. They were soldiers together. That much was true.

They crossed the full stadium sized control room until arriving at a door with a keypad over the handle. Nathan lifted the keypad without pressing any of the buttons, took off his glove, and pressed his fingers on the revealed surface. Then he leaned over and whispered something. The door whooshed open.
