Preview of Moral Code #5

A warmth pressed against Moral Code’s shoulder. It was both hard and soft and tickled his neck. There was something familiar about it.

The smell. Sweet. Like barbeque at camp deep in the wood.

Moral Code cracked open one eye. A forest of brown hair blocked most of his view. The head rubbed further up, bristling hairs under Moral Code’s chin. A hand rested on his chest.

Moral Code remained still. He slowed his breathing so as not to wake the head and hand. Both were so familiar…

He was in bed. With another man. The sheets were soft and smelled of Aqua Velva aftershave, the kind his father used a long time ago.

He opened both eyes. Sunlight peered into the room through partially drawn curtains. A bird chirped just outside.

The hand moved down to Moral Code’s stomach, sliding under the silk comforter. The head turned.

It was Nathan.

Instinct almost launched Moral Code to the ceiling, but discipline kept him still. How did he get here? The last thing he remembered was…a dream? The future. That had to have been a dream. A long, long dream. He’d traveled eighty years into the future and become a superhero. How absurd.

But he was in bed now with a man. His best friend. That was almost as impossible. Two men couldn’t be in bed together. Maybe in the future it was okay, but not in his time. Not in this time.

Chains. There had been cold metal clasped around his wrists. But everything was warm now, cozy under the blankets next to his love.

Moral Code arched his arm around Nathan and pulled him closer. Nathan nuzzled into the groove of Moral Code’s shoulder, a thin layer of facial hair scraping over Moral Code’s chest. It was rough yet made him hold his breath, hoping it would happen again.

Nathan’s eyes remained closed. Was he asleep? Was this a dream they were living through?

Moral Code lifted his hand while keeping his shoulder flat and stationary. He hovered his fingers over Nathan’s head, lowering them close enough to feel the soft, brown hair.

It felt real.

He rested his whole hand on Nathan’s head, grazing his fingers through the thick strands, letting himself get tangled in that forest, hoping it would never set him free.

Then Nathan turned, his nose pressed against him. Moral Code froze. Nathan smacked his lips. His arm stretched back. His head twisted, confused about where to go. It angled up. Big, brown eyes looked up at Moral Code.

Nathan smiled. “Good morning.”
